Fast Pulse Linac
The machine is an rf linear accelerator operating at the L-band frequency of 1300 MHz. Three experimental ports are available: the 90° port offers a beam energy-analyzed to ±1-10%, depending on the slit position. The 30° port gives analyzed beams as well; the 0° port produces slightly higher beam currents, but is not well defined in energy. A trigger synchronous with the electron beam (<10 ps jitter) is available for timing and repetitive sampling experiments. Also available is a non-synchronous pre- or post-trigger, which can be adjusted to ± 10 µs with respect to the sync trigger; this trigger is useful for gating electronics before, or initiating a readout cycle after, the linac pulse.
    Applications: Among others,
  1. Transient Radiation Effects in Electronics (TREE) testing
  2. Semiconductor device characterization via the 50 ps short-pulse capability
  3. TREE code validation experiments, and
  4. Various university research projects.

An overhead view of the 44 MeV LINAC

Note that, because of the 1300 MHz rf structure, all pulse widths longer than the 50 ps short pulse are composed of a string of 50 ps-wide pulses, each separated by 770 ps.

ELECTRON ENERGY: 2-44 MeV
PULSE WIDTH: 50 ps to 2 µs
  Pulse width gradiations: 2, 5,10,20,30,and 50ns,
  500 ns to 2 µs

REPETITION RATE: single pulse to 120Hz
